When one thinks of a scholarship for high school seniors, academic or athletic excellence tends to come to mind. However, there are many other different types scholarships available than just that. Of course there are the run-of-the-mill academic and athletic scholarships, but there are also a ton of scholarships available based on other things as well – creativity, writing skills, and even unique life situations. Luckily, thanks to the internet, such scholarships are easier to find than ever.

How to Find Hidden Scholarships for High School Students

There are several ways for a high school student to find these “hidden” scholarships. The first way is with assistance –the school guidance counselor, career counselor, parents, even the employees at the local city hall – all of these people have one thing in common: their goal is to help students succeed. For students who are stuck on where to start looking for scholarships, talking to one of these people is a great place to start. On the other side of things, it’s quite simple for students to find a scholarship all on their own. A simple Google search, trip to the Town Hall, or even a quick journey to the local or school library can reveal tons of available scholarships. It is also possible to contact companies directly to inquire about potential scholarships they offer. However, taking the advancement of technology into account and the fact that there are much easier ways to do so today, contacting companies directly may not be the most effective way to find scholarships today as it was ten or so years ago, although it is still possible. Not every company advertises their scholarships as public on the internet, after all.

The first thing any high school senior should do when looking for scholarships is to register atwww.fastweb.com. Fastweb is a company dedicated to helping students of all levels find scholarships; it’s like a huge database of scholarships specifically tailored to the students skill set and needs. Scholarship awards can range from a few hundred to a few thousand, and requirements can range from writing a simple essay, to something as simple as being of a certain ethnic background, to the more complicated such as having a certain GPA and having completed certain programs. The best news is that there is something for everyone, and a student can apply for as many scholarships as they want, provided they meet the requirements. Registering at Fastweb is as simple as going to the website, clicking on the Register button in the top corner, and then answering a few questions. Once the registration process is complete, the student can choose to fill out a profile to reveal even more scholarship and internship matches tailored specifically to them. Applying for a scholarship from Fastweb is as easy as registering. From the portal page, clicking on the Scholarships tab will bring up a list of matches for the student. Here, the student can view the award amount, deadline, and type of scholarship. They also have the option of choosing a “Status” for each scholarship, which is a great way of keeping applications organized. From this page, applying to each scholarship is as easy as clicking on the scholarship – all the student has to do is click on the name of the scholarship, then follow the directions to apply. It’s very simple, and a very convenient service for graduating seniors seeking scholarships.

A few examples of some different types of scholarships include the Bettleman Educational Fund Scholarship and the Don’t Be Trashy Scholarship. The first requires students be incoming freshman at a certain California State school, with preference leaning towards students who are U.S. Citizens, California residents, and have maintained a GPA of 3.0 and above. The second scholarship is unique because it’s aimed toward aspiring environmentalists. The student doesn’t need a certain GPA for this one – all they need is to be under the age of 25 and to sign up for and complete the sponsor’s recycling campaign to be considered.

There are a plethora of high school scholarships available like the two named above. Qualifications can range from writing contests to being involved in the arts to promoting a healthy lifestyle to simply being great at math or history. A student doesn’t necessarily need to be signed up with Fastweb (which is free, by the way) to find them. Although having a Fastweb account does help by the easy-to-find-and-easier-to-apply way they present the scholarships they sponsor, as well as keeping them organized and user-friendly for the student, it isn’t the only track to being awarded a scholarship. The best way for a high school senior to find a scholarship suited for them is to think outside the box, to be creative, and to be proactive by going out there and finding the scholarship that is best suited for their lifestyle and financial needs.
